Introduction to Different Tarot Card Decks

Tarot card is a pack of cards that were used in the mid-15th century in different parts of Europe to play a group of card games like Italian tarocchini and French tarot. In the late 18th century until the present time, these cards have been used by mystics and occultists in an attempt at divination and fortune-telling.

There are various kinds of tarot cards but each card has 78 decks. These tarot card decks have a gone a lot of evolution and changes. There were tarot decks which were used mainly for playing card games and it is from these decks that the occult cards have come from. The decks for games have four suits while the occult cards are divided into two parts, the major arcane and the minor arcane.

The major arcana, translated as major secrets, are the trump cards. It is consist of 22 cards without suits and these cards include The Fool, The World, The Magician, Judgment, The High Priestess, The Sun, The Empress, The Moon, The Emperor, The Star, The Hierophant, The Tower, The Lovers, The Devil, The Chariot, Temperance, Strength, Death, The Hermit, The Hanged Man, Wheel of Fortune, and Justice.

Minor Arcana, translated as the lesser secrets, is consist of 56 cards which are divided into four suits of 14 cards each. Of these 14 cards, 10 are numbered while four are court cards. The court cards are comprised of the King, Queen, Knight, and Page/Jack in each of the four tarot suits. The tarot card suits are the swords, wands, cups, and pentacles.

Among the first tarot decks are the Visconti-Sforza and Marseilles. These decks are less detailed compared to the modern tarot decks. Nowadays, there are almost endless varieties of decks available. However, the widely used tarot deck is the Thoth Tarot. This deck has a lot of symbolism that many different disciplines such as science and philosophy. It was illustrated by Aldy Frieda Harris. These decks are colorful and the images are more defined. The different colors are used to distinguish the five elements which are the Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit.

The Hermetic tarot is a black and white deck but is very detailed. It was said to be an artistic recreation of a mysterious tarot deck by Mathers who was a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn. The Mythic Tarot deck, on the other hand, links tarot symbolism with the classical Greek myths, as was also suggested by the name.

However, the most suggested tarot deck for beginners is the Rider-Waite Tarot card deck. The illustrations of these decks are simple and almost childlike. This deck is considered to be the most user friendly though the complex imagery of the major arcane may indicate otherwise for it is filled with esoteric symbolism and concealed tarot card meanings.

Another one used in tarot card reading is the Colman Smith tarot. This is an updated interpretation of the Rider-White deck and the images are psychedelic in colors.
