German Aquarium Undertakes Search for Psychic Octopus
A psychic octopus is not very common. The one that predicted eight World Cup wins in a row last summer has been the only so far. But a German Aquarium chain is not letting this stop it from looking for another one.
The Sea Life Aquarium chain is in search for the incarnate of Paul, the psychic octopus, in honor of the Women’s World Cup which began on June 26 in Sinsheim Germany. Paul, the octopus, was the animal psychic that predicted correctly the results of Germany’s matches in the 2010 World Cup.
One octopus will be placed in each of the eight aquariums in the country which will be used to predict the outcome of the competitions. And just like Paul did, the octopuses will be picking a mussel to eat from one of two containers that have the competing teams’ flags.
To be declared as Paul’s predecessor is the octopus that has the most correct predictions.
Paul was able to score 8 out of 8 accurate predictions in all of Germany’s matches. These included Germany’s wins and its loss to Spain in the finals. This is already considered an amazing work for a human psychic and is an even better feat for a non-human.
This has led to Paul becoming the most popular and memorable figure in the 2010 World Cup. Many people were attracted to Paul and visited him in his aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. There have also been death threats for Paul by soccer fans who were angry at his predictions. Last October 26, Paul died at the age of 2 years and 8 months. However, songs were written for him and a documentary, The Life and Times of Paul the Octopus, was also made for Paul
“If you look back on how octopuses have been treated throughout history, Paul was truly the first friendly one. I am surprised he didn’t inspire 1,000 other documentary filmmakers. It’s the perfect story about viral fame,” said filmmaker Alexandre Philippe who is anticipating to release his documentary later this year.
