Hua Dong to be Nominated to UNESCO

Hua dong, the Vietnamese ritual of communicating with the gods through psychics, may soon be submitted to UNESCO for recognition as a world intangible cultural heritage. Hua dong is usually used to communicate with Dao Mau, the Vietnamese Mother Goddess. In Vietnam, this is a compulsory ritual in some temples. It is believed that the gods can enter the bodies of psychics to give instructions, root out evil spirits, cure diseases and bless believers. Singing of the Chau van or Vietnamese traditional music is part of the ritual. In the past, it was considered a superstitious activity, but it has been recently discussed as part of the folk belief sciences.

The Institute of Culture and Art of Vietnam has already started collecting materials including documents, photos and video clips about the ritual. Additional materials will be collected from the Hau dong festival this July at the Lanh Giang Temple in northern province of Ha Nam.

The Hanoi authorities have asked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to compile a file for Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) Festival. The traditional event is held every year from the 6th to the 12th of the fourth lunar month. The 9th day of the fourth lunar month is the major day for celebration at the Phu dong village in Gia Lam district of Hanoi.

The move to nominate it to UNESCO to protect it as an art form has been met by many detractors saying that this is not the right time as it has been widely exploited by some psychics to make money.
