Lansburys Psychic Role a Success
In the recent revival of Noel Coward’s comedy “Blithe Spirit” Angela Lansbury plays psychic Madame Arcati. The cast also stars Rupert Everette, Christine Ebersole and Jayne Atkinson under the direction of Michael Blakemore.
The story revolves around Charles Condomine, a writer doing research for his novel about a homicidal medium. He and his wife Ruth witness a séance at a friend’s house led by Madame Arcati, who unintentionally calls on the spirit of Elvira – Charles’s first wife.
What ensues next is a rip-roaring laugh trip that touches on love triangles, exorcism and the beyond. The brilliantly written script is a great tandem with this all-start cast. Lansbury is the star of the night with exacting emotions that deliver each line with a punch. In her role as Arcati, she is able to make each scene look easy and outright funny.
The four-time Tony Award winner offers all the eccentricities necessary to make the play a success. She combines giddiness, enthusiasm and a spot of dance. The 83-year old Lansbury truly worked her magic on this one.
Adding to the total experience is the well thought out stage design, character costumes and lighting.
The cast was able to wittily spin this comedy. The on-stage banter is always precise, as a Coward play should be.
