The astrology view from the other side
Last week’s column on astrology has generated much discussion, and resulted in a few responses. I set out last week to argue point that personality isn’t dictated by the stars, by birth date, based partly on the notion that I don’t feel I possess all the astrological attributes normally assigned to a typical Pisces. I also mentioned, in passing, a friend of mine – a Scorpio – who said those born under his sign shouldn’t be trusted. I meant it to all be taken lightly, of course – and I really didn’t think it would stir anything up. So, I was mildly surprised to find an email in my work inbox from an astrologist named Beth, who took issue with some of my contentions.
Astrology is more than the Sun signs. All the planets have something to say about your personality. We are mixture of all the zodiac signs, just in different proportions based on where the planets fall in your chart.
While we do not know why astrology works, we also must remember that we do not know how gravity works. (Go ahead, look it up.) I’m just pointing that out because some people like to go on about if you can’t say how it works, then it can’t and it doesn’t.
Carl Jung proposed the idea of synchronicity, that is the movement of the planets and earthly events have a correlation because both are subject to the forces in the Universe. Many astrologers today use that idea as a working theory of why astrology does work.
I later got still another email, too long to reprint in its entirety here, from a spiritual counselor named Suzanne, who also had some interesting insights, including this one, “The ‘energy’ that is your ‘birthdate’ is who you are on the inside of yourself. The way you ‘feel, react or judge’ most things. But, the physical attributes and characteristics that The Creator gave ‘you’ upon entry here…are the indicators of the energies that really shape your ‘personality’ more.”
