Some say that psychic ability is a family trait, passed down the family line. In recent news however, it isn’t just psychic abilities that are transferred from generation to generation, apparently fraud is also something that gets inherited.

Lisa Miller, a 27-year-old from San Francisco, has served her 60-day jail sentence for scamming a brokenhearted woman. Miller promised the unidentified woman to rid her of evil spirits and in return received the sum of $108,000 and a Corvette.

The victim contacted Miller via an ad in a Japanese newspaper for a $10 psychic reading. Over the course of a year, Miller convinced the woman to buy $5,000 urns telling the victim that the evil spirits of 12 Japanese ancestors had been transferred to her. The urns are to help put the spirits to rest.  The victim also gave Miller gift cards and her car. The victim ended up declaring bankruptcy due to her losses.

The victim came forward after hearing of the arrest of Miller’s mother-in-law. The 56-year-old Lola Miller was charged with a similar psychic scam case. Lola Miller pleaded guilty in August for two counts of grand theft and will be sentenced in January. Lisa Miller’s sister-in-law Danielle Miller, 23, is also scheduled to appear in court on scam charges worth $36,000.

The judgment was handed down to Lisa Miller by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Barnum. The terms of the contest plea of “theft under a false pretense” was signed in September. In addition to jail time, Miller is also on probation for five years, forbidding her to conduct fortune telling, tarot card reading, giving spiritual advice and love spell casting.

According to Deputy District Attorney Cherie Bourland, Miller has returned $61,000 of the total amount the victim paid her.

Miller’s lawyer, Scot Candell, still desputes his client’s crime. “Being a psychic is perfectly legal,” said the lawyer. The so-called victim had problems of her own. I believe the amount the victim claimed stolen was inflated. There’s no evidence of what the victim loss. Yes, money was paid and a service was provided.”
According to Candell the only reason Miller pleaded no contest was to get out of jail since her judgment did not allow bail. Miller has three children ages 9, 5 and an infant.
