In astrology, there are three main qualities. This is the second major classification that defines the nature of the sign (the first being the Elements). The qualities assign the signs to quadruplicities or three groups of four. The quadruplicities of astrological signs are sometimes referred to as crosses because each quality forms a cross when drawn across the zodiac.

Unlike the natural tendency of signs with the same element to work together smoothly, signs with the same quality generally do not complement each other.

The cardinal sign is associated with Aries Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. It is often related to initiation, action, leadership and creativity. In astrology, each zodiac sign is associated with the elements. There are four classic elements: water, fire, earth and air.

Fire signs are said to be positive or extrovert masculine signs. Fire represents desires and creative energies. Zodiac signs associated with fire are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Earth signs are also positive masculine. Earth represents material resources, possessions and environment. Zodiac signs classified under the Earth element includes Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
