While today’s tarot readings are usually done off the more popular decks such as the Rider-Waite, few know of its history. The earliest decks were actually hand-painted and were of limited availability. Only during the advent of the printing press did it become more accessible to the public.
One of those that survived the test of time came from the French city of Marseille. The Tarot de Marseille is a standard pattern of design form which may of today’s decks are derived.
The name of the pattern was coined only in 1889 by Gerard Encausse in his book le Tarot des bohemiens. It was popularized by the Paul Marteau, who used the name to refer to designs produced in the city of Marseille.

It is not uncommon to find reversed cards when spreading during a tarot reading. There is a way to avoid or encourage reversed cards when shuffling. To avoid it, start by fixing the cards so they all face the same direction. Be mindful of this direction before dividing your deck to shuffle.
If, on the other hand, you would want to introduce reversed cards, divide the deck before the shuffle and rotate one of the piles upside-down (180 degrees). You can also use the scrambling method. Shuffling them around in different directions can result in reversed cards.
Interpreting reversed cards is often reserved for the more advanced tarot readers. Some tarot readers interpret it as the opposite of the upright card. Some readers take a more complicated approach and base the meaning on the surrounding cards. Other readers take the reversed card as a more intense variation of the upright counterpart.

Each card in the tarot deck has a numerological significance. For instance, in the Major Arcana cards, all of them are numbered (except for The Fool, which is tagged with a zero). For the Minor Arcana, on the other hand, the numbers on each pip card represents it numerological scheme.
The combination of tarot and numerology can lead to a deeper understanding and interpretation of a person’s specific spread. For cards that are numbered with double-digits, it can be broken down into single digits by adding them together.
Hence, aside from the usual meanings of each tarot card, the reader can also interpret it based on the number’s attribute. Below are some common interpretations of the number zero to nine:

The Rider-Waite tarot deck is the most popular brand in use today in the English-speaking world. It is also known as Rider-Waite-Smith, Waite-Colman Smith or the Rider deck. It is intricately designed by artist Pamela Colman Smith under the instructions of Arthur Edward Waite. At that time, Waite was a known academic and a mystic. He was a member of the order of the Golden Dawn, an occult society.
The deck first came out in December 1909, published by London’s Rider Company. Each card holds a wealth of symbolism – from the colors to the details to the background. It veers away from the Christian imagery of older decks. As such, characters like the Popess became the High Priestess. The symbols used were influenced by 19th century occultist and magician Eliphas Levi.
As tarot cards evolved more for divinatory readings, the Rider-Waite deck became a heavy influence on the later sets. Examples of those influenced by the Rider tarot deck include the Universal Waite tarot deck, Golden Tarot, the Nigel Jackson Tarot, the Golden Rider and the Aquarian tarot deck.

Here are several ways to shuffle tarot cards. In a tarot reading session, you may be asked to shuffle the cards so your touch can make the reading more personal. If the session is an online tarot reading, the reader may do the shuffling for you.
The following are ways to shuffle tarot cards:
1.The Riffle Shuffle – The same way you shuffle common playing cards, as in the game of poker. Split the deck in to two halves and hold them with one hand each with the cards facing down. The bottom card of one half goes over the bottom card of the other. Cards are intermingled as they drop to the surface of the table alternately. This assures a thorough mixing of the cards. It’s somewhat difficult to do this for bigger tarot cards.
2.Weave shuffle – Intermingle the cards by holding half the deck in one hand and another have in the other hand. Insert both halves into each other either by their long side or their short side. Once both halves have been pushed together, square them up.
3.Scrambling – Spread all the cards face down on the table and start to move them around and mix them up. You might need a bigger table for this shuffle method.

You might have heard about tarot card being used for game play? Yes, it’s not uncommon. But their more popular use is for divination or a tarot reading. It can be used to foretell an event, help you decide on something important, or uncover some past events that influence your life.
When going for a tarot reading, there are some terms you need to learn:
Reader – This is the person with the cards, the one interpreting them for you.
Querent – Well, basically, this is you. The person inquiring from the cards
Spread – How the cards are laid out on the table
Significator – The card that represents the question being asked or the querent
Before a reading begins, you may be asked to shuffle the deck. This is believed to be a good way to influence the cards with your touch. You should concentrate on your question (if you have one), while doing this. If you are getting an online tarot reading, it may work in a different way. Though you are not able to touch the cards physically, there can be graphical representations of them. Some online tarot readers may simply ask you to concentrate on your question while they do the shuffling for you.

Ever tried learning how to read tarot cards? This is one of the most popular divination tools around. The use of cards to foretell the future is called cartomancy. However, tarot cards are also pretty popular for playing games. It’s not all about magic and the occult with these cards. In fact, they gained so much popularity over the years that the cards themselves have evolved extensively.
You may hear about different deck types and the characters in them. Two of the major divisions among tarot cards are the Major Arcana and the Minor Aracana. These are simply not a matter of peculiarity in decks. They are two different breeds of tarot cards all together.

The Fool, sometimes known as The Jester, is a trump card of the Major Arcana. It is often numbered zero. In earlier decks, The Fool is depicted as a beggar or a vagabond. He wears ragged clothes, has no shoes and carries a stick. It has later on evolved into a beggar leaning onto a staff.
However, with the development of cartomancy decks (such as the Rider-Waite deck), The Fool becomes a young man standing on a precipice. He has a rose in one hand and a bundle of possessions in the other. He is sometimes accompanied by an animal, in most cases a dog. Other decks may show him as a jester or a bard, similar to the joker of playing cards.
He often represents a protagonist taking the Fool’s Journey. In a tarot reading session, The Fool might represent the person asking for the reading. He is sometimes said to symbolize the search for experience. He is innocent and possesses a childlike ability to stumble on the inner workings of the world. However, he can also be naïve. His daydreams may make him miss real dangers or hidden perils (such as falling of a cliff).
The focus of this tarot card is on faith, hope and trust. If it appears upright, it can mean a fresh start or a new beginning. If the querent is faced with a difficult decision, having this card turn up during tarot reading may mean a positive outcome. The reversed fool is a warning against being impulsive or giving in to temptation and recklessness.

Tarot readers follow a different variety of patterns for laying out their tarot cards. This is called a spread. Generally, each position in the spread is assigned a number, and cards are turned over in certain sequence.
The following are common ways to spread the cards for tarot reading:
1.Celtic Cross – Is the most common spread used and sheds light on many aspects of life. Ten cards are used with five arranged in a cross and four placed vertically beside it. Another card is placed horizontally across the center cards.
2.Astrological spread – Uses 12 cards in a circle similar to the twelve signs of the zodiac. A 13th card is placed in the middle.
3.Single card – Even just 1 card can be considered a spread.
4.3-card spread – One card represents the past, the second the present and the third is for the future.
5.Horseshoe spread – Seven cards are arranged into a U shape. Card 1 represents the past. Card 2 is for the present. Card 3 stands for influences. Card 4 for obstacles. Card 5 for expectations. Card 6 shows the best course of action. Card 7 represents the likely outcomes.
6.Tetractys – Ten cards arranged as a pyramid with four rows. Each row represents an element: earth, water, fire and air. This is based on the Pythagorean mathematics and the Platonist thought.
7.The Mirror spread – works for relationships.
8.Mandala Spread – To explore the spiritual side of the user, mostly for introspection.
9.Star spread – Follows a star pattern starting from the lower left part. The first card represents what is seen. The second, what can’t be seen. The third card represents those you can change. The fourth card what can’t be changed. The final card is for what you can expect in the future.
There are several other popular spreads and some tarot readers customize the way they layout and read the cards. Your tarot reading should be enhanced if you concentrate on your questions and work with your tarot reader.
