The Basics of Vedic Astrology

Yet another tradition of Astrology, Vedic astrology is also known as Indian astrology or Hindu astrology. It has three branches. Siddhanta is traditionally Indian astronomy. Samhita, is similar to the western version of mundane astrology. For this branch, the positioning of celestial bodies are used to analyse events. Hora is a predictive form of astrology that analyses the natal chart based on the moment a question is asked.

The Vedas, or the scriptures, connect the microcosm and the macrocosm. It relies on sidereal zodiac signs rather than the more frequently used topical zodiac of Western astrology.

This science-art is also known as Jyotisa, which is Sanskrit for “light, heavenly body”. It plays a very important role in Hindu culture. In fact, many babies are named based on their jyotish charts. Vedic astrology is also used to make life decisions such as marriage, moving into a new home, having children and starting a business.

Vedic astrology also has it’s version of the zodiac signs. The 360 degrees of the ecliptic are divided into 12 equal parts and each 30 degree part is called a rashi. Like it’s western counterpart, the rashi is also influenced by qualities and elements. They are as follows:

5 Tips for Choosing Your Personal Astrologer

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Astrology plays an important role in many people’s lives. Some use it to guide their business and financial decisions. Others consult the stars regarding love. Then there are those who simply cannot live without their daily horoscope reading.

However you choose to use Astrology or the amount of belief you put into it, is really relative to your lifestyle. If you think that a personal astrologer would help you gain better insight on your life and be able to take better control of it, then by all means, consider getting one to work with you on a long-term basis.

Here are five tips to help you select the right astrology counselor:

Experience – The number of years a person has been working as an astrologer lends wisdom to their readings that you might not find from someone who is relatively new to this science-art. You should try to ask your candidates how they learned astrology. A good astrologer would share with you their education, training and total number of years they have been practicing astrology.

Cost – Service is not always free. Some astrologers can probably give you a sample reading, but for a long-term relationship, you need to know what kind of payments to make.

Tools and Methods – Find out what kind of astrology he or she practices. Will you have a personalized birth chart at the end of your session? Does the astrologer focus on mundane astrology, esoteric astrology, horary astrology, electional astrology or Vedic astrology? Having a bit of background on the types of astrology would also help you make a selection.

Understanding Horoscopic Astrology

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Horoscopic Astrology is a one of the many astrological systems in existence today. Some claim it developed in the Mediterranean region during the late 2nd or early 1st century BC. It is also closely linked to the Vedic astrology, which some say is the oldest surviving form of horoscopic astrology.

In Vedic astrology a two-dimensional diagram divides the heavens. Horoscopes, or astrological charts, are created from this by measuring the alignment of the celestial bodies against specific moments in time and from a specific point on Earth. The horoscope is also divided into 12 celestial houses. To properly cast a horoscope, calculations are performed using arithmetic and geometry.

Horoscopic astrology is different from other astrological traditions because of the computation of the degree of the Eastern horizon rising against the backdrop of the ecliptic at the specified moment. This is also known as the ascendant.
